The Picture of Dorian Gray: Lessons From Photography

'Photography is about capturing souls, not smiles.' — Dragan Tapshanov

Photography is a perfect way of capturing more than what’s on the surface. It can suggest and evoke more than what it has captured. With photography, a moment is stitched eternally into the fabric of time.

A photograph is more than just ink and dye; it’s suffused with the richness of the moment it’s captured in. It’s the perfect way of capturing the essence of its subject. Some of the world’s most iconic photographs transcend the subject itself. Instead, they evoke feelings and emotions the person in the picture might have felt in that very moment. “The Most Beautiful Suicide,” for example, perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere in that very moment.

Immortalising Yourself

The concept of using art to immortalize one’s self is an age-old concept. The perfect example of that can be seen in Oscar Wilde’s seminal novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The tale narrates the story of Dorian Gray who sought to immortalise his beauty for time and eternity in the form of a self-portrait.

Photographs can be taken to be the modern version of paintings. They’re said to capture the very soul of a person, preserving it for time to come. Photography captures the very essence of a person or an event in such a way that no other medium ever could. It gives beauty and meaning to an event in a manner that no other form of expression could truly capture.

Preserving a Moment in Time

While there are a number of moments in people’s lives that are worth celebrating, only a handful of those are worth preserving for time. The birth of a child, for example, is a transcendental moment that’s almost otherworldly in its beauty. Photography can help you preserve that moment and cherish it forever.

A wedding between two lovers is another instance in which two souls come together to spend the rest of their lives in union. The look your beloved gives you as you hold their hands through the ceremony, or their laugh when you twirl around the dance floor afterwards; all of these are magical moments that can be captured and immortalized with the help of photography.

Forever Young: Reminiscing with Photographs

Have you ever thumbed through an album, reliving all the wonderful memories those images managed to preserve? Those photos seem almost to leap out of their physical confines and come to life, reminding you of happier times gone by.

While it can be argued that the introduction of smartphones to the mainstream has reduced photography and pictures to a ubiquitous occurrence, the case for the importance of old-school photography can still be made.

There’s something almost magical about going through professionally-shot photos. They’re more than just keepsakes; they’re tangible memories that you preserve for generations to come. It’s no wonder that precious photographs and albums are one of the most frequently rescued items in case of house emergencies.

Photography Offers Immortality

Many artists and philosophers over time have talked about becoming immortal through their art. While they could afford to do so, what about us regular folks? How do we preserve our presence so that it transcends through time?

Enter photography.

You probably have photographs saved of old family members that you might never have met or only knew for a brief moment in time. You too will be immortalized smiling and having a good time in many pictures, preserved for generations to come.

Photography Documents Your Life’s Journey

From the moment you were born to where you are at present, one thing that has faithfully documented your journey from a mewling newborn to a cultured adult is photography.

From first steps to first smiles, your first day at school to graduation; photography preserves every precious moment. It captures tiny details that would otherwise never have remained. A look from your beloved on your wedding day or the way your little one looks at you, all can be captured with a click, and sustained for eternity.

Photography Becomes a Part of Your Legacy

Photographs can outlive us. Years after we’re gone, our grandchildren and their grandchildren will look at those photographs and talk about who we were and the life that we lived. Photographs are important personal artifacts that become a part of our legacy. They’re jigsaw pieces that complete the larger picture of our whole being.

What I like to do in my spare time...

One of my favourite things to do on my spare time is to transform old photos and experiment with the lighting the colours and occasionally just rebuild an entire image into another with my editing tools.

Awhile back a good friend of mine came to me with a new project. "The spirit of teamwork" Vanity Fair Style.

She wanted to enter a photo of the " intensive care unit" in a photo contest! We discussed the possibilities and the "Vanity Fair magazine spread" concept for a while before setting a date for the shoot. This photo was originally taken in an empty ICU room on a busy weekday. We set up the lights, the background, the medical "props" right before everyone showed up. DRs,Nurses,Orderlies came I had only 15 minutes before they all went back to their patients. The Jewish General Hospital ICU team WON the contest with this photo.

Black and white photography offers a new dimension to images, an entirely different perspective if you will. This format brings out the shadows and the shapes and  also emphasizes the light source or the effects of the light on  the subject.

Baby picture Before and After 2

I've always wanted to be able to create these types of images... One day, soon, I hope to be as good as one of my idol Anne Geddes
